Anton Michielse
Artist’s Statement
Anton Michielse, born in Noord-Brabant, gained fame through his idiosyncratic use of materials and expressive works in which texture and structure are central. As an autodidact, he managed to find a unique balance between abstraction and an almost tangible material intensity. Michielse's works emphasize the raw, unprocessed beauty of materials, resulting in compositions that are both visually intriguing and rich in texture.
Influences
Michielse's works show affinities with the oeuvre of Dutch artists such as Jaap Wagemaker and Bram Bogart, who are known for their experimental use of textures and non-traditional materials. Michielse also has international peers who inspire him or with whom his work shows similarities. For example, Antoni Tàpies and Jean Dubuffet can be mentioned, both pioneers in exploring the material qualities of paint and texture in abstract art. Their influence on Michielse is palpable in the way he uses his materials to create raw, expressive works that go beyond traditional painting.
