91 x 176 x 30 cmAcryl resin, fiberglas, polyurethaneIn September 2023, The Millen House curated a show dedicated to furniture and art connected to architecture. One of the highlights was a unique custom bookshelf by Jan Cornelis Rietveld (1919-1986), son of renowned architect and furniture maker Gerrit Rietveld, created for the photographer Violette Cornelius. Gert Wessels saw this cabinet and was instantly inspired. Rietveld is one of his great sources of inspiration. Both were born and raised in Utrecht. But most of all, Gert recognizes in Rietveld a kindred spirit: a hands-on approach to creating beautiful objects resonating with the
spirit of the times. When asked to create a piece for our show JUPITER4, Gert offered to make a cabinet in his own unique style but in the color of Rietveld as a tribute to the master. The result is a truly one of a kind object, rooted in one of the most important design periods of The Netherlands, the "Wederopbouw" period, but demonstrating today’s freedom of expression in contemporary design, in a unique and intriguing dialogue.
