This 1993 work on paper by Shinkichi Tajiri (1923–2009) exemplifies the artist’s iconic exploration of the "knot," a motif symbolizing connection, tension, and unity. Rendered in bold red and blue against a white background, the minimalist composition reflects Tajiri’s ability to distill universal themes into simple yet powerful forms. Born in Los Angeles to Japanese parents, Tajiri studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and in Paris. His work was influenced by his Japanese heritage, Cubism, technology, and his wartime experiences. A member of the CoBrA group and one of its few sculptors, Tajiri became renowned for his "warrior" figures before focusing on the knot motif in 1967. This piece highlights Tajiri’s mastery in creating art that resonates across cultures, bridging personal and universal themes.
