Govert Heikoop (1952-2007), abstract wooden wall sculpture, 1990s

Large wall mounted sculpture by Dutch artist Cover Heikoop

In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi is a world view centred on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of appreciating beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent and incomplete”.

After studying under architect Daniel Libeskind at Cranbrookacadamy Dutch artist Govert Heikoop started making sculptures from plywood. First he painted them in bright colours, but later he experimented with textures and visibility of the actual wood. The sculpture is called “BilobalTwilight”,. referring to the phenomenon of intense light that occurs at sunrise, just before sunrise, as well as at sunset.. It is a short, luminous moment when day turns into night and night into day. Biglobal refers to the two forms that radiate twilight. That is what also happens when this sculpture is illuminated differently at different times of a day by the changing light, and in the evening by the shadows of the artificial light on the wall.
