Constructivist Geometric abstract sculpture in light wood

3,950.00

Large geometric-abstract sculpture by Jan Hoog, possibly made as a special commission for the City of The Hague. This piece has its roots in the abstract by the artists of De Stijl with their geometric-abstract language of form. It demonstrates a combination of architecture and sculpture, reminiscent of skyscrapers.

This sculpture, part of a commission by the city of The Hague, brings to mind architecture. The stacked geometric blocks, made of solid wood, could be a model for an apartment building. In these strong geometric shapes one sees the influence of Constructionism and De Stijl. Practitioners of De Stijl, including Gerrit Rietveld, were greatly influenced by architecture and urban planning with stark forms of right angles and crossed lines. In the 1960s and 1970s Dutch Constructivists and Geometric artists wanted to build a new society in which art could be incorporated into architecture and design. Notable Dutch post-war Constructivists include Bob Bonies, Peter Struycken, Jan Schoonhoven, Ad Dekkers and Joost Baljeu, whose influence is visible in this sculpture. Many of the Dutch Constructivists of the period shared a similar vision to that held by contemporary Minimalist and abstract artists working across Europe and the Americas, like Bridget Riley in the UK, François Morellet in France, and Carl Andre, Agnes Martin and Sol LeWitt in the United States. They all shared an understanding that the visual elements of the work, line, plane, form and colour, presented their own forces of expression.
