Mart De Houwer, line drawing small

950.00

Mart de Houwer dedicated her artistic work to one topic: the line. With her serene drawings in pencil and ink, and working in a movement dominated by male artists, she carved out a unique place in the art world. While some of her little drawings consist over 4000 lines, her larger works have close to half a million lines, created over a period of months. Most of her works stayed in her private possession and were kept in the house and adjacent studio.   Around the time De Houwer started making her drawings, Dutch artist Jan Schoonhoven worked on a similar theme. Trough his drawings he wanted to eliminate the emotion of the artist and come to a quiet state of mind. Like Schoonhoven, Mart de Houwer researches with her line drawings the behaviour of drawing as a technique, by variation of the stroke of the pen on paper find a tranquil space.
