Rudolf Wolf was a Dutch designer, active as an architect, sculptor, furniture designer, and industrial designer. Wolf started working at Philips Eindhoven, where he designed lamps and lighting fixtures. In 1955 Wolf established himself as a freelance designer. He designed products from furniture to mopeds and interiors. In 1964 he called this “total design,” the design of everything conceivable. His clients included furniture brands, suchs as Leolux and Elsrijk and bike manufacturer Batavus. In 1964 he was the first Dutch national to be awarded the best international design by the American Institute of Interior Designers in New York. He received this award for the “Gamma chair,” a club chair for Meander from 1963 with a steel frame and a geometrically shaped seat. This work attracted national and international attention.  “I love everything to do with architecture. I read books about it and I follow its development closely. Le Corbusier is my great man. In America I was impressed by the skyscrapers and modern buildings in Manhattan. I have seen an immensely tall steel building, with only glass and aluminum visible. The entire environment reflected in that building. It has left me speechless.”
