Rare Zanotta Safari chair in canvas, Italy, 1970s

2,750.00

Rare armchair with tilting backrest by Italian brand Zanotta. Uniquely, this chair is fully dismountable with a removable cover in army green canvas and leather details. No screws or glue are needed to assemble this chair: the clever construction tightens the joints when the chair is occupied, improving strength and stability. This type of chair, a Safari chair, is a modern reinterpretation of the Indian Roorkhee chairs used by the British military – perhaps the earliest examples of self-assembled furniture. Although Italian furniture icon Zanotta still produces safari chairs like the famous Moretta chair, designed in 1917 by Bernard Marstaller, there is very little known about this specific model.  The chair is well loved over the years, with repairs and slight fading of the canvas, adding to its utilitarian charm. An extremely hard to find piece, perfect for any design collection or brutalist interior.
