François Morellet French, 1926-2016
Overview
"My systems are very strict, but I use them to arrive at results that are unpredictable."
François Morellet (1926–2016) was a French painter, sculptor, and light artist, widely regarded as a pioneer of geometric abstraction and kinetic art. He developed a rational, systematic approach to art, often based on chance operations, grids, and mathematical principles. In the 1960s, Morellet co-founded the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV), which emphasized collective experimentation and viewer participation. His work spans painting, neon installations, and architectural interventions, always characterized by clarity, humor, and rigor. Morellet’s art has been exhibited internationally and is represented in major collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Tate Modern in London.
