"Colour, shape and energy converge in each piece I create: my work is jewellery for the space."
"With every colour combination, shape and texture, I aim to shift the energy of a space—and through that, touch the people who live in it."
Femke Hofhuis (b. 1990) is a Dutch designer and artist, and the founder of FEMM Amsterdam, a studio established in 2020. Before launching her own practice, Hofhuis built a career in set design and styling, experiences that shaped her acute sensitivity to colour, atmosphere, and spatial composition.
With FEMM Amsterdam, Hofhuis creates site-specific artworks, installations, and design objects that bridge the worlds of art and interior architecture. Her pieces are conceived as “jewellery for the space”: not simply decorative objects, but works intended to shift the energy and emotional tone of an environment. Central to her approach is a deep fascination with colour—its immediacy, power, and psychological impact. She explores contrasts between warm and cool tones, matte and glossy surfaces, soft and hard textures, allowing each project to become a unique exploration of how colour and form transform perception.
Hofhuis works intuitively, responding to the energy of a location and translating it into sculptural compositions. Her process often begins with sketches or notes that gradually evolve into physical works ranging from wall objects and acoustic coverings to carpets and large-scale installations. Alongside this, she engages in material experimentation that combines function with art, producing tactile, layered pieces that respond to light and movement within a space.
The studio’s portfolio spans private homes, boutique interiors, and hospitality projects on an international scale. FEMM Amsterdam has collaborated with architects, interior design studios, and brands, including projects for ME by Melia Hotels, SPACES, and a commission for the Zaha Hadid-designed ME Dubai Hotel. These collaborations highlight Hofhuis’s ability to integrate emotional depth and artistic refinement into functional environments.
Her work has been featured in international publications such as Elle Decoration, Design Milk, Harper’s Bazaar Arabia, Residence, Volkskrant Magazine, and DesignWanted, affirming her growing reputation as a designer whose practice moves fluidly between art, design, and architecture.
Beyond her studio practice, Hofhuis maintains a strong emphasis on intuition and everyday creativity. She describes her work as an ongoing dialogue between colour, texture, and energy, with the aim of creating pieces that enrich daily life and invite people to connect with their surroundings in new ways.
