Maarten Baas’ “Smoke Cabinet” is a remarkable piece from his *Where There’s Smoke* series, created by burning furniture and preserving its charred surface with polyurethane lacquer. Originally sourced from Le Souk Amsterdam, the cabinet’s scorched wood contrasts elegantly with its brass detailing, merging rawness with refinement. This transformation turns destruction into a poetic, functional object, while its simple minimalist shape evokes mid-century designs of Charlotte Perriand. A graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven, Baas gained international acclaim with *Smoke*, debuting at Salone del Mobile in 2003. His work blurs the boundaries between art and design, combining humor, craftsmanship, and conceptual depth. Featured in numerous exhibitions pieces from this series are held in prestigious collections, including MoMA and the Victoria and Albert Museum, exemplifying Baas’ importance in contemporary design.
