Since 1959, Tinguely built his creative automata, using the chaotic movements of his constructions to create works in the form of mechanical expressionism and to exploit the creative powers of the unpredictable mechanical devices. Tinguely regularly organised so-called "do-it-yourself" happenings, in which all participants, in collaboration with the apparatus and the artist, could influence the movements of the painting machines.
