Ewerdt Hilgemann's *Positief & Negatief* (1972) is a minimalist sculpture crafted from painted plywood, consisting of two 40.0 x 40.0 x 40.0 cm elements. The work explores the interplay of solid and void, creating a dialogue between presence and absence. The contrasting black forms reflect Hilgemann's fascination with geometry and balance, drawing on Constructivist ideals and echoing the aesthetics of Sol LeWitt and Donald Judd. Known for his later imploded stainless steel works, this early piece showcases Hilgemann’s precision and conceptual rigor. Acquired by artist Siebe Hansma in 1978 during the Gorinchem Symposium Foundation exchange, the sculpture carries historical significance. *Positief & Negatief* is a bold and contemplative work, embodying timeless minimalist principles and Hilgemann’s evolving artistic vision.
