Marleen Kaptein’s PARALLAX I is a monumental work that pushes the boundaries between art, design, and spatial perception. Measuring 280 cm in height, its carbon fiber construction with integrated LED lighting transforms it into a dynamic exploration of light and space. The verticality and precise geometry evoke parallels with Jan Schoonhoven’s structural reliefs, where repetition and rhythm create meditative spatial interventions. At the same time, PARALLAX I draws conceptual connections to Lucio Fontana’s cuts (tagli), as it plays with the idea of slicing through space, opening up voids and perspectives. The carbon fiber’s sleek materiality, contrasted with the glowing warmth of its LED lighting, creates a tension between physical solidity and the immateriality of light. Completed in 2022, PARALLAX I invites viewers to reflect on the interplay of structure, material innovation, and the infinite possibilities of space.
