Large and powerful piece by Dutch artist Joop Vreugdenhil. A piece from his early career. Although abstract in composition, upon a closer look one can see hints or architecture About the artist Johannes (Joop) Vreugdenhil was born July 18, 1904 in The Hague and died on April 28, 1969. Joop Vreugdenhil attended the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. He was a painter, draftsman and lithographer. After the Second World War, Vreugdenhil started working figuratively in an expressionist style. Initially his painting were expressionistically tinted figurative representations until he started to focus on making geometric abstract compositions in the 1960s. The task he set himself was to arrive at a harmonic arrangement of the rectangular elements with which he built up his compositions. His proces of painting was preceded by a process of careful consideration of dimensions, mutual proportions, of shape and color until a balance was reached. He made many trips to France. He was a member of the Haagse Posthoorngroep from 1956 to 1962. He was also a member of Pulchri Studio. His work is included in the Dutch National Collection. “Verlaten Bergstadje”, signed and dated on the front and verso.
