André van der Vossen Dutch, 1893-1965
H 70 W 50 cm (incl. frame)
André van der Vossen collage — “Le Soir,” a rare mid-century abstract composition (1947–1950), signed, beautifully framed, and exemplary of the artist’s postwar geometric period.
This refined collage on paper in a modern frame is an exceptional example of André van der Vossen’s experimentation with abstraction in the late 1940s. Titled “Le soir” at the lower left and signed “André van der Vossen” at the lower right, the work arranges torn pieces of coloured paper—deep black, plum, olive, taupe, grey and cream—against a striking black background. The composition demonstrates Van der Vossen’s sensitivity to rhythm, balance, and material tactility, qualities that defined his transition from figurative work toward a more modernist, geometric vocabulary.
The collage is presented in a clean, contemporary frame that highlights the verticality of the piece. Condition is excellent, with the paper elements stable and the colours retaining their original saturation.
About the Artist
André van der Vossen (1893–1963) was a Dutch modernist painter and graphic artist associated with De Onafhankelijken and active in the broader postwar avant-garde in the Netherlands. His work—ranging from expressionistic still lifes to refined geometric abstractions—is held in institutional collections including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Collages from this period are particularly scarce and highly sought after for their strong compositional clarity.
