This lithograph by American artist Sam Francis features a square format intersected by a cross-like structure, a compositional motif that recurs in his graphic and painterly work. The image reflects Francis’s interest in balance, spatial tension, and the interaction between structure and gesture. While best known for his use of color, Francis also produced works in a more restrained palette, in which form and movement emerge through contrast and layered mark-making.
