Jaap de Carpentier oil painting — “Landschappelijk,” expressive mid-century Dutch abstraction in oil on canvas (65 × 80 cm), a richly layered landscape-inspired composition by the Rotterdam-born painter.

This atmospheric work by Jaap de Carpentier (1921–1996) demonstrates the artist’s confident handling of colour, form, and rhythm within an abstracted landscape structure. In Landschappelijk, sweeping diagonal movements intersect with block-like passages of teal, ochre, rust, and ivory, creating an energetic interplay between depth and surface. The composition retains hints of horizon, architecture, and topographical structure, yet remains fully rooted in painterly abstraction — characteristic of De Carpentier’s oeuvre from the 1950s–1970s, when he explored expressive geometry and layered chromatic constructions.

Executed in oil on canvas, the painting retains strong, saturated colours with appealing texture from the original brushwork. The work is in very good condition, with minor, age-appropriate surface wear consistent with mid-century materials. Presented in its period frame, which complements the palette and character of the piece.

About the Artist

Jaap de Carpentier was a Dutch modernist painter active in the postwar decades, known for his bold abstractions influenced by landscape, architecture, and the structuralist tendencies of mid-century European art. His work is increasingly recognised for its expressive colour fields and dynamic spatial tensions.

A powerful and atmospheric abstraction, well-suited for collectors of Dutch postwar painting.
