The Artema lamps reflect Joe Sterck’s belief that design does not always have to be
serious. Instead, the project approaches lighting in a playful and flexible way, encouraging
interaction and movement within the space.
Presented at Collectible, the Artema series consists of two versions: a large and a small
lamp (Artema Mini & Artema Maxi). Each lamp stands on three legs made from flexible
aluminum, allowing the object to be subtly reshaped. Because of this flexibility, the lamps
can lean against surfaces, rest in unexpected positions, or be hung, giving them an
almost insect-like presence as they settle unpredictably within a room.
The lampshade is intentionally simple: a sheet of paper in standard A3 format, attached
with two hairpins. This straightforward construction is a conscious design choice. If the
shade becomes damaged, it can easily be replaced by the user without any technical
knowledge, simply by inserting a new sheet of paper. In this way, the design encourages
repair and extends the lifespan of the object.
Light, adaptable, and slightly mischievous in character, the Artema lamps are designed to
move with the space and adjust to changing needs. They are objects that travel and find
their own place within everyday environments.
