Marleen Kaptein Dutch
Overview
Advanced materials reveal new possibilities for beauty, lightness, and form.
Marleen Kaptein (b. 1971) is a Dutch designer whose work bridges advanced technology, material innovation, and contemporary craft. Through collaborations with the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR), she translates aerospace manufacturing techniques and materials such as carbon fibre into sculptural furniture and lighting. Combining robotic production processes with a strong sensitivity to form and material, Kaptein creates works that challenge traditional boundaries between design, engineering, and art. Her practice explores how emerging technologies can be transformed into objects that are both technically sophisticated and deeply human in their experience.

Biography
Technology becomes meaningful when it is translated into something human.
Marleen Kaptein (b. 1971) is a Dutch designer whose work explores the meeting point of technology, material innovation, and contemporary craft. Working with advanced composites such as carbon fibre, she transforms technologies developed for aerospace and industrial engineering into sculptural furniture and lighting. Through collaborations with the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR), Kaptein has pioneered new applications for robotic fibre-placement techniques, creating works that combine technical precision with organic form. Her practice challenges conventional distinctions between art, design, and engineering, resulting in objects that are both experimental and highly refined.
