Carel Visser

One of the leading figures in post-war Dutch sculpture, Carel Visser (1928–2015) continuously explored the expressive potential of material, structure, and repetition. While his early practice is closely associated with geometric steel constructions, from the 1970s onwards his work became increasingly intuitive, incorporating natural materials and organic forms without abandoning the underlying architectural logic that defines his oeuvre.
Created in 1991, Tweelingzusters belongs to a significant body of sculptures inspired by a simple, personal observation: the embrace between Visser's wife and her twin sister. Rather than depicting the figures literally, Visser distilled this encounter into an abstract composition of intersecting forms, where rhythm, balance and reciprocity take precedence over representation. The motif would remain important throughout his career and reappear in later sculptures, including monumental public works.
Carved directly from wood, the sculpture preserves the tactile evidence of its making. Visible chisel marks, fractured planes and the natural grain of the timber remain integral to the composition, allowing the material itself to shape the work's expressive character. The resulting object balances mass and openness, solidity and movement, revealing Visser's enduring fascination with the dialogue between construction and nature.
This sculpture was acquired from Richard Foncke Gallery, Ghent, and remained in a private Belgian Collection. I'ts an significant piece, reflecting an important period in Visser's mature practice.
