Gert Wessels Dutch, b. 1994
Gert Wessels is a Dutch artist and designer whose work explores the intersection of sculpture, design, and material experimentation. Based in Utrecht, he is known for creating vibrant, organic forms that challenge conventional distinctions between the natural and the artificial, the functional and the sculptural. Working intuitively with materials such as polyurethane foam, fiberglass, acrylic composites, and resin, Wessels embraces chance as an active component of the creative process.
Rather than beginning with a fixed design, Wessels allows forms to emerge through cutting, carving, and reacting to the material itself. The resulting objects often appear biological or landscape-like, yet are constructed from synthetic and industrial materials. Through this tension, his work reflects on contemporary relationships between technology, ecology, and the built environment.
Moving fluidly between autonomous sculpture, functional objects, and large-scale installations, Wessels creates works that balance humor, experimentation, and material intelligence. His practice forms an ongoing investigation into how objects evolve through process, coincidence, and transformation, positioning him within a new generation of artists and designers working beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries
