Geometric shapes and curved lines combine to form an abstract composition, possibly the idea of a landscape.

A drawing of quiet defiance — Rudolf Bauer, a founding figure of European abstraction, working in secret with a stub of pencil on scavenged brown wrapping paper while held in a Gestapo prison in the late 1930s.

Description

This exceptionally rare and intimate work on paper was executed by Rudolf Bauer (1889–1953) during his imprisonment by the Gestapo, after his art had already been condemned by the Nazi regime as "Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate Art). Stripped of studio, canvas, and materials, Bauer continued to draw on whatever he could find — in this case, a sheet of coarse brown wrapping paper, worked in pencil and signed with his distinctive "RB" signet at lower right.

Despite the desperation of its circumstances, the drawing carries the same disciplined visual language that defines Bauer's mature non-objective work: a rhythmic procession of geometric forms along the upper register, a tautly cross-hatched sphere suggesting cosmic or celestial structure, and a spare, diagrammatic horizon of intersecting lines below. It is a rare instance of an artist's formal vocabulary surviving intact under conditions designed to silence it — evidence of the discipline and inner conviction that carried Bauer through his darkest period.

Bauer was a central figure of the German avant-garde, associated with Herwarth Walden's legendary Der Sturm gallery in Berlin alongside Kandinsky, Klee, Chagall, and Marc. Through his close relationship with Hilla Rebay and Solomon R. Guggenheim, Bauer became one of the most important artists in the formation of the Guggenheim's founding collection — Guggenheim acquired several hundred of his works, and Bauer's ideas on non-objective painting were foundational to the philosophy behind what would become the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. It was Guggenheim's intervention, financed to secure Bauer's release from Gestapo custody, that ultimately allowed the artist to emigrate to the United States in 1939, where he continued to exhibit and lecture, including at Harvard and Yale.

Works from Bauer's prison period are exceedingly scarce; most did not survive, and those that did are held largely in institutional and important private collections. As a document of artistic resilience under totalitarian persecution, and as a rare surviving sheet from one of the twentieth century's pioneering abstractionists, this drawing holds significance well beyond its modest scale — a piece of profound art-historical weight in a wonderfully intimate, wall-ready format.

Newly conservation-framed under museum glass, the work presents beautifully and is well suited to a wide range of interiors, from a considered abstract-art grouping to a single, quietly powerful focal point.
