Squiggle (2024) is a steel sculpture by Rosa Shepherd that transforms a spontaneous gesture into a three-dimensional form. Through a sequence of flowing curves and folded planes, the work explores the relationship between movement, body, and space, inviting viewers to experience the sculpture through their own physical encounter with it.

In Squiggle (2024), Rosa Shepherd transforms a fleeting gesture into a sculptural presence. Constructed from folded and curved steel plates, the work traces a continuous line through space, translating movement into volume. Rather than treating sculpture as a static object, Shepherd approaches form as the residue of bodily action—a physical record of motion made permanent.

The sculpture's looping rhythm evokes the spontaneous mark of a hand drawing across a page, yet its industrial materiality anchors it firmly in the physical world. Curved planes alternately conceal and reveal the space within, encouraging viewers to move around the work and experience its shifting silhouette. As perspectives change, so too does the perception of the sculpture, creating a dynamic relationship between object, body, and environment.

Drawing on a sculptural lineage that includes artists such as Richard Serra, Shepherd explores how movement shapes our understanding of space. Her works originate in bodily gestures—turning, sliding, tracing paths across a floor—which are translated into drawings and subsequently realised in steel. The resulting forms are at once precise and intuitive, balancing weight with fluidity, permanence with movement.

With Squiggle, Shepherd captures a moment that would ordinarily disappear. The sculpture becomes both a drawing in space and a monument to the body's passage through it.
