This intimate stone sculpture exemplifies Lika Mutal’s meditative approach to modernist sculpture and her lifelong engagement with natural materials. Carved into a gently folded form, the work emphasizes weight, balance, and tactile presence, allowing the stone’s inherent qualities to guide the final composition.
Mutal is widely recognized for her contribution to postwar abstraction and minimalist sculpture, particularly through her use of stone as a material charged with spiritual and geological significance. Influenced by pre-Columbian art, landscape, and silence, her sculptural language is reduced yet expressive, focusing on subtle shifts in volume and surface.
This small-scale work reflects Mutal’s belief that sculpture should invite slow looking and physical awareness. Positioned between minimalism and organic abstraction, it offers a concentrated example of her sculptural philosophy and an accessible entry point into her oeuvre.
