An atmospheric oil painting depicting a small white mountain house surrounded by dark, densely layered architecture. Using a restrained palette of blacks, browns and blue-grey tones, Karl Rödel builds the composition through expressive, heavily textured brushstrokes. The luminous white façade emerges from its surroundings, creating a striking contrast between light and shadow. With its simplified geometric forms and pronounced impasto, the painting reflects Rödel's exploration of the boundary between landscape, architecture and abstraction. Houses and mountain dwellings were recurring subjects in his work, particularly following the establishment of his holiday studio in Matrei, East Tyrol, in 1964.

This atmospheric oil painting by Karl Rödel depicts a small white mountain house nestled among dark, densely arranged buildings. The composition is dominated by deep blacks, muted browns and blue-grey tones, interrupted by the luminous white façade at its centre. Two small windows and an arched doorway emerge from the thickly applied paint, lending the otherwise sombre scene a quiet sense of intimacy.

Rödel constructs the surrounding architecture through broad, heavily textured brushstrokes, reducing rooftops, walls and openings to simplified geometric forms. The buildings appear to merge into one another, creating an almost abstract arrangement of overlapping planes. The contrast between the dark surroundings and the illuminated house draws the viewer's attention towards the centre, while the absence of human figures reinforces the painting's stillness.

Houses and landscapes were recurring motifs throughout Rödel's career. From 1964 onwards, he maintained a holiday studio in Matrei, East Tyrol, where the mountainous surroundings inspired numerous depictions of alpine dwellings. Although the precise location represented here has not been established, the painting belongs to this broader exploration of architecture and landscape.

The work demonstrates Rödel's ability to balance recognisable subject matter with abstraction. Through its restrained palette, pronounced impasto and carefully structured composition, an ordinary mountain house becomes a study of light, material and architectural form.
