Bernard Aubertin
Tableau brûlé, 1978
Created in 1978, this monumental Tableau brûlé belongs to Bernard Aubertin's most celebrated body of work. Having devoted the early years of his career to monochrome red painting, Aubertin gradually introduced fire as both subject and medium, transforming combustion into an essential part of the artistic process.
Rather than depicting fire, Aubertin employed it as a creative force. Carefully arranged matches were ignited across the surface, leaving behind traces of smoke, ash and charred wood. The resulting work records an irreversible act of transformation in which destruction and creation become inseparable.
Executed at nearly one metre in height, this large-scale example possesses an exceptional architectural presence. The work originates from Galerie Swetec, Düsseldorf, one of the galleries closely associated with Aubertin's practice, and is accompanied by its original protective Plexiglas cover.
A defining example of post-war European avant-garde, Tableau brûlé embodies Aubertin's lifelong investigation into colour, material, fire and the physical reality of painting.
