The 3D Rugs series reflects Studio Nina van Bart's ongoing exploration of materiality, surface, and spatial experience. Developed in close collaboration with CS Rugs, the collection investigates the creative potential of an innovative 3D tufting technique, transforming the traditional rug into a sculptural landscape that engages both sight and touch.

Inspired by textures found in nature and architecture, the present design recalls wind-swept sand dunes, rippling water, and the subtle topographies that shape the Dutch landscape. Rather than functioning as a flat decorative surface, the rug introduces depth and relief, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow that changes throughout the day. The result is an object that occupies a unique position between textile, sculpture, and architectural intervention.

Van Bart's design process combines manual experimentation with digital technologies. Initial observations are translated into hand drawings and digital studies before being refined through three-dimensional modelling. This dialogue between analogue intuition and technological precision remains visible in the final work, where organic irregularities coexist with a carefully controlled spatial composition.

Beyond its visual qualities, the rug reflects Van Bart's broader interest in how materials influence our experience of space. The pronounced relief enhances acoustic comfort while simultaneously creating a strong tactile presence. Its monochromatic palette allows texture to become the primary means of expression, inviting closer inspection and interaction.

As with much of Van Bart's work, the boundary between architecture, design, and art is intentionally blurred. The rug functions not merely as a floor covering, but as a sensory landscape that alters the atmosphere of its surroundings. Through its sculpted surface and architectural scale, the work transforms an everyday object into an immersive spatial experience.

Part of a limited series developed with CS Rugs, the 3D Rugs collection demonstrates how contemporary textile design can extend beyond decoration to become an integral component of the built environment, shaping the way we perceive and inhabit space.
